Dr Dirk Maclean
 
Dirk holds a Doctorate in Philosophy from La Trobe University. His PhD thesis was part of a larger project looking at the point where Martin Heidegger's thought meets with the traditions of Zen and Taoism. Namely, how Martin Heidegger's understanding of language and poetry may compliment the practice of Zen Arts.
 
Dirk holds a Master of Business Administration. He lectures at Masters level in Human Resource Development in Australia at Swinburne and RMIT, and in Vietnam at Hanoi University. He employs philosophical concepts in his teaching where this may enrich the learning process. For example, the non-Western understanding of knowledge that informs the highly successful forms of knowledge management pioneered by Japanese companies, or the discourse ethics of Jurgen Habermas that underpin successful leadership styles in a knowledge-rich environment.
 
Dirk is Principal of RIICED ptm (riiced.com.au) This enterprise draws on his extensive experience in emergency services and crisis management.  RIICED ptm provides services to the corporate and public sectors relating to risk, incident, crisis, emergency and disaster management.
 
Dirk is competent in Martial Arts and Zumba dance fitness, and is a successful gym trainer. He meets his clients’ requirements through a uniquely designed personalised program that combines aerobic fitness, strength conditioning, and technique; in a way that is both effective and fulfilling.
 
Dirk is interested in the philosophical and spiritual aspects of dance, martial arts, and fitness training. He combines the physical training programs with one-on-one philosophical counselling sessions using meditation and relevant philosophical discourses. These draw on a variety of traditions from Zen to Heidegger. They allow the fitness-training client to gain insight into the spiritual and philosophical foundations of the physical activities: the generators of the sense of peace, well being, and joy, with a view to developing the capacity for experiencing similar contentment across all facets of - and endeavours in - life.
